The word trust has almost become cliché when talking about hiring someone to perform a professional service. However, at Sweeney Merrigan Law, we take pride in bringing real meaning to the word trust. To us, real trust is about the strong relationships we develop with those who we represent. It is through these relationships that we ensure our clients are informed about all phases of the legal process. We understand that not every client will fully understand the legal implications of each part of a case. It is our job to keep each client informed throughout the process and provide the decision-making support they require, when they need it.

Working with Sweeney Merrigan Law

What makes Sweeney Merrigan Law different from other Boston personal injury law firms?

At Sweeney Merrigan Law, we make the case about the client. Every case is different, and so is every client. While one client might desire a quick out-of-court settlement, another might want his or her story to be told in court. It is our job to give the client options so that he or she can make an informed decision about how they want their case to proceed. At Sweeney Merrigan Law, lawyers work for the clients, not the other way around. We are successful because we build trust with our clients through honest communication. That means we need to talk not only about the strengths of a case but also the weaknesses. We form a partnership with our clients at the very first meeting, and we build on it all the way through the conclusion of the case.

How does Sweeney Merrigan Law approach personal injury cases in Boston?

At Sweeney Merrigan Law, we have a rule that defendants cannot settle or resolve a case until they know who our client is or was. What that means is that we cannot zealously advocate for our clients until we know them and who they are. Then, the defendant must acknowledge what happened, take responsibility for what happened, and then make it right.

How does Sweeney Merrigan Law structure its fees for personal injury cases?

Because we work on contingency fees, we are only paid if we are successful. This arrangement means that our interests are aligned with our clients in that we want to efficiently achieve a maximum recovery. While we are only paid if we are successful, the decision to settle a case or take a case to trial is a decision that is only made by the client. However, before a client makes the decision, it is our job to achieve the maximum possible settlement offer and advise the client of the benefits and risks associated with either path.

Are there any upfront costs I need to pay when hiring Sweeney Merrigan Law for my personal injury case?

Part of the contingency fee agreement means that there are no upfront costs paid by the client. If there are necessary expenses that must be paid to represent the client, those costs are advanced by Sweeney Merrigan Law. Some examples of these costs are filing fees, medical record costs, expert costs, and investigators costs. If the case is successful, the Sweeney Merrigan Law is reimbursed from the settlement for case expenses. However, in the event the case is unsuccessful (for any reason), the client is not required to pay the firm back. Sweeney Merrigan Law is always willing to spend money to build a client’s case but is also very judicious about not spending any money unnecessarily. At the time of settlement, clients will receive a full accounting so they can understand, if they accept a settlement, exactly how much money they will put into their pocket.

What kind of results has Sweeney Merrigan Law achieved?

Sweeney Merrigan Law has achieved record-setting results for their clients, including the largest single event settlement in 2023 of $17M, the largest medical malpractice settlement ever in New Hampshire of $20M, and the largest jury verdict in the history of Franklin County, Massachusetts of $10M which is also the largest sexual assault verdict in the history of Massachusetts. We represent clients who have cases both large and small and provide the full force of our firm to maximize our results.

What is the typical timeline for a personal injury case handled by Sweeney Merrigan Law?

The timeline for a typical personal injury case varies from one case to another. Some factors that can shorten or lengthen will be based on whether liability is disputed, the significance of the injuries or harm, whether a client needs time to recover before resolution, and whether litigation will be required. Some cases can resolve in as little as six months, while others could go on for a number of years. However, in many cases, the client’s wants can influence the attorneys’ strategy in managing the timeline for the case. In all cases, Sweeney Merrigan Law is committed to maximizing the recovery as efficiently as possible.
