Who Oversees My Professional License?

The Board of Registration in Medicine licenses and disciplines physcians in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  The Division of Professional Licensure in Massachusetts represents 32 additional professions that require licensing. This includes nursing, chiropractic, psychology, pharmacy, real estate, social workers, and other professions.  In addition to the Board of Registration in Medicine for physicians and the Division of Professional Licensure for other professions, each individual profession is governed by a separate Board that oversees the license-holders conduct. Professional licenses are highly regulated and licensees must adhere to regulations and standards set forth by these governing bodies.

When a licensed professional faces accusations of misconduct, it is imperative to seek competent and experienced legal counsel.  When facing possible disciplinary action by the licensing Board, inadequate counsel can lead to the loss of your license. In some cases, there may be criminal charges that may also require extreme caution and legal representation.

What Are the Differences Between Professional Licensure Cases and Other Litigation?

When a licensed professional is facing a disciplinary complaint, administrative law procedures apply.  Administrative law is quite different from civil litigation. The agency investigation of a complaint will determine whether or not a professional license will be suspended or revoked.  Licensees are subject to the decisions of a professional licensing board that controls an individual’s license.

No matter how insignificant the complaint may appear, every licensee is entitled to legal representation to assist in protecting an individual’s professional license. You need experienced representation to navigate the complex administrative law issues that are unique to a professional licensure case.
