JUUL Labs manufactured “JUUL,” which has become one of the most popular products for e-cigarettes. JUUL Labs has alleged that using their product, JUUL, is safer than smoking cigarettes, but recent studies show there are risks associated with using the product. Researchers have found a higher risk of getting bronchiolitis obliterans, or popcorn lung, with using e-cigarettes such as JUUL. We must remind ourselves that JUUL is a new product which has limited data on its long-term effects.
The audience that buys into JUUL tends to be younger, stretching back to junior high school. Young adults and pre-teens that may become addicted are unsure of the risks they’re exposing themselves to. While JUUL labs has advertised their product as a good alternative to quitting cigarettes, they’ve refrained from advertising their nicotine levels – one JUUL pod has the same amount of nicotine as a pack of cigarettes.
Statistics show a massive increase in use between 2017 and 2018, resulting in the overall use of tobacco products to rise by 38 percent among high school students and 29 percent among middle school students. Concerns deepen due to the impact this has on younger minds. At a young age, when the brain is still developing, nicotine has the ability to damage the brain. Nicotine exposure can lead to:
Furthermore, it’s proven that kids are more likely to engage with combustible cigarettes if they’ve tried Juul or other e-cigarettes.
It’s believed that the convenience, smell, and discreet appearance of JUULs have led to the sharp increase in younger users. Symptoms of popcorn lung include:
The symptoms caused by popcorn lung are likely to effect young and active children. Using JUULs and other E-Cigarette devices potentially heightens the risk for cardiovascular disease and lung disease, as well. Aside from the potential health issues associated with the devices, there’s proof they can explode. According to ECigOne.com, there have been 316 Vape Explosions to date in which 219 included personal injury or death.
Of course, appropriate precautions against JUUL and E-Cigarettes are difficult to make while the FDA continues to postpone review from 2018 to 2022. In the meantime, the manufacturers of these devices have been able to advertise the devices without regulation.
