Boston Actos Lawyer

What is Actos?

Actos, or pioglitazone, is an oral medication prescribed to control Type 2 diabetes by helping control blood sugar levels. However, it has been linked to a number of negative side effects, including:

  • the increased risk of bladder cancer
  • congestive heart failure
  • liver disease

Actos Warnings

On June 15, 2011, the FDA issued an urgent health warning to users and prescribers of the drug Actos, saying that, “…an increased risk of bladder cancer was noted among patients with the longest exposure to pioglitazone, and in those exposed to the highest cumulative dose of pioglitazone.” In fact, recent data found that users of Actos had a 40% increase in the risk for bladder cancer when using the drug for over 24 months. This warning came only days after French and German doctors stopped prescribing Actos to their patients due to recent studies connecting the use of Actos to cases of bladder cancer.

Although Actos remains available in the United States, patients should know that not all drugs sold to the general public are always safe. There are many people who have developed bladder cancer as a result of using this drug, yet it still remains on the market. If you or anyone you know has been affected by the use of Actos or another diabetes drug such as invokana, contact Sweeney Merrigan Law at (617)-391-9001 to speak with an attorney who specializes in Actos side effects.
