What Are Beovu Injections?

The United States Food and Drug Administration approved Beovu as a prescription medication in October 2019. Beovu was to be used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Age-related macular degeneration is a disease that destroys your central vision. Without your central vision, you cannot see fine details. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels develop under the macula. The blood vessels then leak fluid and blood.

Beovu treats wet AMD by preventing the abnormal blood vessels from forming under the macula. Generally, the injections are given to the patient every month for three months. After that, the patient may receive Beovu injections once every two to three months.

What Are the Problems and Side Effects of Beovu Injections?

Novartis makes Beovu. The drug manufacturer marketed the medication as a safe, effective, and convenient treatment for wet AMD. In addition, Novartis claimed that Beovu could treat wet AMD with fewer injections, which meant less money and time for patients.

However, within five months after the drug was released to the market, an independent group of eye doctors released its safety review of Beovu. According to the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), patients using Beovu could be at risk of vision loss.

The ASRS shared that 14 patients had reported cases of vasculitis after using Beovu. Vasculitis is inflammation of blood vessels. Retinal vasculitis is inflammation of the retinal artery.

Eleven of the patients suffered from occlusive retinal vasculitis. Within a month, the cases had increased to 25 cases of vasculitis, including 21 cases involving occlusion.

What Are the Symptoms and Dangers of Occlusive Retinal Vasculitis?

Occlusive retinal vasculitis is also referred to as vasculitis retinal artery occlusion. The condition generally does not cause pain. However, several symptoms can result in vision loss.

Symptoms and signs of retinal vasculitis include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Visual floaters
  • Color blindness
  • Dark spots in the vision field
  • Image distortion
  • Flashes
  • Scotoma
  • Pain, in some cases

In some cases, a patient could develop retinal vascular occlusion. The veins become narrow and blocked, which can cause blindness. In many cases, the blockage and blindness cannot be reversed.

Beovu Lawsuits Seeking Damages

The number of individuals who have been injured because of Beovu treatments is growing. The FDA required Novartis to add black box warnings about the dangers of intraocular inflammation. However, patients injured before the warning can still file a lawsuit against the drug manufacturer.

Furthermore, failure to warn is just one reason for filing a product liability lawsuit. If a drug is defective, a warning about a potential side effect may not absolve the drug manufacturer from liability for producing and selling a defective drug.

Recovering Compensation for Beovu Vision Loss Claims

If you developed vision loss or other injuries after using Beovu, you could be entitled to compensation for your damages.

You could receive compensation for your:

  • Medical bills and expenses
  • Ongoing medical treatment
  • Loss of vision and other permanent impairments
  • Loss of income, including reduced future earning potential
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of quality of life

A product liability claim against a drug manufacturer requires time, research, and access to resources, including medical experts. You will have to show the product suffered from a design defect, manufacturing defect, or marketing defect to hold Novartis strictly liable for your damages.
