Allergan, Inc. markets several types of breast implants and tissue expanders to consumers. They have saline and silicone breast implants. They also produce Natrelle 133 plus tissue expanders and Natrelle 133 tissue expanders. Both tissue expanders are used in reconstructive surgery.
The company marketed its textured implants to consumers claiming that the texturing on the implants helped them stay in place. Allergan claims that the textured surface permits tissue to grow and adhere to the surface of the breast implant, making it less likely the breast implant would move.
Unfortunately, the textured breast implants have been linked to a rare form of cancer.
The FDA published a News Release on June 24, 2019, informing the public that it has issued a request for Allergan to recall some models of its textured breast implants. The company notified the FDA it would issue the international recall of the specific models of textured breast implants.
The FDA also requested that doctors explain to their patients the risks of “breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)” associated with breast implants and tissue expanders. In addition, the FDA recommended that patients be given information by their doctors explaining the warning signs and side effects of BIA-ALCL.
On June 1, 2020, the FDA updated its Safety Communication regarding reports of BIA-ALCL and BIA-ALCL-related fatalities associated with BIOCELL textured breast implants. According to the FDA, it noted 573 reports of BIA-ALCL cases worldwide. Allergan breast implants were involved in 481 of those cases. Twelve women who died had Allergan breast implants when they were diagnosed with BIA-ALCL.
At that time, the FDA issued a warning that the risk of developing BIA-ALCL was six times higher if a woman had the Allergan breast implants than other textured implants.
BIA-ALCL is a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It is not breast cancer but a cancer of the immune system. Cancer has been found in the fluid buildup and scar tissue near the Allergan BIOCELL textured breast implant. The cancer can spread throughout the body.
Warning signs and symptoms of BIA-ALCL include, but might not be limited to:
The symptoms of BIA-ALCL may not show up for years after breast implant surgery. Surgery is required to remove the BIA-ALCL-affected tissues. Without treatment, the prognosis is death.
You should talk with your physician to address concerns you may have regarding BIA-ALCL and cancer. Your doctor can explain the risks and perform tests to determine if you have BIA-ALCL. If you have BIA-ALCL, the treatment options may include surgery and chemotherapy.
Our lawyers at Sweeney Merrigan Law, LLP are working to hold Allergan, Inc. liable for the damages caused by these defective breast implants. You could be entitled to compensation for damages, including disfigurement, medical bills, pain and suffering, and lost wages.
