In a tragic turn of events, a third teenager succumbed to injuries sustained in a rollover accident that occurred near the UMass Boston campus earlier this month, according to officials.

The incident, which took place on Morrissey Boulevard’s northbound side around 3:15 a.m. on January 4, initially claimed the lives of two youths—a 14-year-old boy from Dorchester and a 15-year-old boy from Mattapan. The latest victim, a 17-year-old resident of Roslindale, passed away at the hospital this week, confirmed Massachusetts State Police.

While a fourth victim, a 15-year-old boy from Dorchester, also suffered injuries in the crash, he is expected to make a recovery.

Investigations by State Police reveal that the teenagers were traveling at a high rate of speed in a 2013 Hyundai Accent before it rolled over. The vehicle has since been taken to a state police facility for further examination. Remarkably, officials discovered a firearm inside the wreckage.

State police have not yet released the identities of the individuals involved in the crash.

“The investigation into the facts and circumstances of the incident, including the actions of the four juveniles, and the sequence of events, prior to the crash, remains active,” noted the State Police in a statement. No other vehicles were involved in this fatal event, and the probe into the causes and contributing factors continues.

The Boston community is mourning the loss of such young lives, and authorities are urging the public to provide any information that could assist in understanding the full scope of this tragedy.
