Boston, MA (April 2, 2024) – At around 5 a.m. Tuesday, a devastating six-alarm fire erupted in an East Boston multifamily residence, resulting in at least one fatality and several injuries. The fire, which blazed at the intersection of West Eagle Street and Meridian Street, rapidly extended to nearby buildings.

The Boston Fire Commissioner, Paul Burke, reported that during the emergency, firefighters were able to rescue five individuals through the use of aerial ladders. Tragically, one person did not survive. The fire crews had to contend with extreme heat and dense smoke conditions, which forced them to implement frequent personnel changes to battle the inferno. Injuries were varied, with a child among those hurt, though the full extent of the injuries is still pending. The identity of the individual who lost their life has not been disclosed pending further investigation into the cause of the fire.

Investigators are actively working to determine the origin of the fire and ensure the safety of the surrounding community. The Boston Fire Department reminds residents to practice fire safety and have working smoke alarms installed.

The Boston community has been deeply affected by the incident, with local officials and organizations stepping in to provide support and assistance to the victims and their families. The tragedy has sparked a discussion on fire safety regulations and precautionary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
